In this video the caregiver will learn how to instruct an individual on how to perform a sliding board transfer from a wheelchair into/out of a recliner
Process/Verbal Cues Going Into the Recliner
- Wheel up to the recliner getting as close a possible
- Place wheelchair at 45 degree angle
- Lock brakes
- Remove armrest next to recliner
- Put on gait belt
- Place book or object under edge of chair to prevent rocking as needed
Instruct client to:
- Place sliding board under buttock and thigh while leaning away from the recliner
- Point board in direction headed
- Push down with your hands as you move your bottom across the board Caution not to grab the end of the board due to potential of pinching fingers as weight comes across the board
- Remove the board by leaning away from board, sliding out from under buttock
Process/Verbal Cues Coming Out of the Recliner
- Caregiver place wheelchair next to the recliner getting as close as possible
- Place wheelchair at 45 degree angle
- Lock brakes
- Remove armrest next to recliner
- Put on gait belt
Instruct client to:
- Place sliding board under buttock and thigh while leaning away from the wheelchair
- Point board in direction headed(use caution if going up hill/middle of board resting on edge of wheelchair causing potential tipping point)
- Push down with your hands as you move your bottom across the board Caution not to grab the end of the board due to potential of pinching fingers as weight comes across the board
- Remove the board by leaning away from board, sliding out from under buttock
