The content included in the video and comment section is for general information only.  Equipment and individual circumstances will vary.  Always refer to and review an equipment manual for specifics on use and safety of your piece of medical equipment.  Please consult with a local Physical or Occupational Therapist regarding your specific circumstances and use of medical equipment.

In this video the caregiver will be introduced to a sliding board which is sometimes called a transfer board.

A sliding or transfer board might be used with an individual who is unable to stand and safely bear weight through their legs to assist with moving themselves from one surface to another. Example:  leg injury, amputation, paralysis, stroke, generalized weakness.  The individual will need to have decent sitting balance in order to safely use a sliding board with assistance.

Transfer boards come in a variety of sizes, shapes and
materials

Things to consider when purchasing a board:

  • Length of the board- small space/short distance transfer (bathroom), longer distance (wheelchair to car)
  • Will the board get wet
  • How much assistance is needed/does the client have fair sitting balance
  • Weight capacity
