PROMs Lower Extremity Supine

In this video, Alex, PT is demonstrating leg (lower extremity) passive range of motion (PROMs).  Passive range of motion assists in keeping the joints mobile for individuals who have limited ability to move their own legs or arms.

Things to remember:

1. Make sure your client/loved one is in a comfortable position in a reclining chair, on the bed or on the floor as appropriate

2. Do Not force the range of motion, stop at resistance

3. Monitor loved one/client visually and verbally for pain or discomfort

     Consult with a Local PT/OT regarding:

  •  joint contracture (severely tight/short muscle limiting joint motion)
  •  pain with movement

4. Adjust the bed height as able in order to protect your back

5. Bend your knees and move your body to assist in moving the leg instead of relying solely on your arms

 

Joint Motions:

1. Hip/Knee Flexion & Extension (bending and straightening of the hip and knee) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

2. Hip Abduction/Adduction (moving the leg out and in at the hip) 5-10 repititions as tolerated

3. Hip Internal & External Rotation (rolling the leg in and out at the hip) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

4. Ankle Dorsi & Plantar Flexion (moving the foot up and down for movement at the ankle) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

5. Gastroc Stretch (calf stretch) 2-3 reps for 30 second hold as tolerated

6. Hamstring Stretch 2-3 reps for 30 second hold as tolerated

7. Trunk Range of Motion/Stretch Perform 5 reps as tolerated applying a mild stretch at the endrange of movement on each side
