In this video the caregiver will learn about the basic features of a hospital bed.

Controls: full electric adjustments vs manual crank for height adjustment

Check with MD, insurance and local medical supplier on coverage

Always raise the height of the bed to reduce the amount of bending/strain on the caregiver's back

Raise head of the bed

  • as needed to reduce the strain of assisting an individual out of bed
  • for position change for pressure relief

Raise foot of the bed

  • to elevate legs for reducing swelling
  • for position change for pressure relief
  • to assist in moving loved one up in bed

Bed Rail

  • most adjust several increments in height
  • good for allowing an individual to assist in rolling themself side to side for bathing/dressing
  • use pull pins to adjust height
  • most rails can be fully removed by pulling pin out and sliding each end of rail up/out of post sleeve
  • when putting rail back on the bed, put one end of the rail back into the post sleeve at a time
  • remember that most rails can slide to lengthen and shorten, post sleeves can turn to assist in putting the rail back onto the bed

Brakes

  • always keep locked when working with someone in the bed
  • unlock in order to move the bed

**Again, use the bed adjustments to take care of yourself in order to care for your client or loved one.
