PROMs Upper Extremity

In this video, Becca, OT is demonstrating arm (upper extremity) passive range of motion (PROMs).  Passive range of motion assists in keeping the joints mobile for individuals who have limited ability to move their own arms or legs.

Things to remember:

1. Make sure your client/loved one is in a comfortable position in a chair/wheelchair or on the bed

2. Do Not force the range of motion

Consult with a Local OT or PT regarding:

  • joint contracture (severely tight/short muscle limiting joint motion)
  • pain with movement

3. Adjust the bed height as able in order to protect your back

4. Bend your knees and move your body to assist in moving the arm as needed instead of relying solely on your arms

Joint Motions:

1. Wrist & Finger Flexion & Extension (bending the wrist down & up, closing & opening the hand) 10-15 repetitions as tolerated

2. Forearm Supination & Pronation (Turning the palm up & down) 10-15 repititions as tolerated

3. Elbow Flexion & Extension (bending & straightening the elbow) 10-15 repetitions as tolerated

4. Shoulder Flexion & Extension (raising the arm up and back down) 10-15 repetitions as tolerated

5. Shoulder Abduction & Adduction (moving the arm up toward the side of the head then back down next to the body) 10-15 repetitions as tolerated

6. Shoulder External & Internal Rotation (elbow at 90 degrees, roll the arm out to the side, then back in toward the belly) 10-15 repetitions as tolerated

Consult with a local OT or PT for any questions or concerns regarding these PROMs
