TIP: Ordering a Walker

Cindy gives tips on ordering walkers including measurements to collect and things to consider.

Specifications to check for when ordering a walker:

  • Handle height and/or individual height recommendations for user, with handle height being the most important. (To check for users appropriate handle height, have them stand fully upright with arms relaxed at their sides.  Measure from floor to wrist level, which is where handle height should hit.  ****Remember, if they are really close to the short end limits may want to look at junior walker specs, if close to the tall end limits, check specs on "tall" walkers
  • Adult walker may be too tall with wheels added (adding 1 1/2-2"). If you fall into 5' 1"-5' 3"--you may need a junior walker
  • May need leg extensions or "tall" walker if you fall in upper height ranges  (some may only adjust to accomodate up to 5' 10" to 5' 11")
  • Recommend 5" wheels over 3" wheels
  • Walker width for doorways and for individual use needing to step slightly into walker
  • Weight limit of walker, if over, look at bariatric walker
  • Weight of walker
  • On rollator walker, check seat height   For safety, would like height to be at approximately mid thigh or just slightly higher in order for improving safety when sitting down, not having to come up onto toes to reach the seat
