PROMs Lower Extremity Sitting

In this video Cindy is demonstrating passive range of motion (PROM) of the legs in a seated position. Passive range of motion assists in keeping the joints mobile for individuals who have limited ability to move their own legs or arms.

Whether your loved one or client is in a wheelchair, recliner or reclining wheelchair, as the caregiver, always make sure to use good body mechanics to protect yourself, bringing yourself down to the level of the leg being exercised as needed (using a chair, kneeling).

Things to remember:

1. Make sure your client/loved one is in a comfortable, supported sitting position. 

2. Do Not force the range of motion, stop at resistance.

3. Monitor loved one/client visually and verbally for pain or discomfort

4. Use slow and controlled movements

     Consult with a Local PT/OT regarding:

  •  joint contracture (severely tight/short muscle limiting joint motion)
  •  pain with movement

 

Joint Motions:

1. Hip/Knee Flexion & Extension (bending and straightening of the hip and knee) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

2. Hip Abduction/Adduction (moving the leg out and in at the hip) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

3. Hip Internal & External Rotation (rolling the leg in and out at the hip) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

4. Ankle Dorsi & Plantar Flexion (moving the foot up and down for movement at the ankle) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

5. Ankle Inversion & Eversion ( moving the foot inward and outward at the ankle) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated

6. Toe Flexion & Extension (moving the toes down and up at the ball of the foot) 5-10 repetitions as tolerated
