HOW TO USE: Gait Belt - E

The content included in the video and comment section is general information only.  Equipment and individual circumstances will vary.  Always refer to and review an equipment manual for specifics on use and safety of your piece of medical equipment.  Please consult with a local Physical or Occupational Therapist regarding your specific circumstances and use of medical equipment.

In this video the caregiver will learn how to properly apply and adjust a gait belt. We recommend the use of a gait belt with any activity in which an individual may need assistance for safety. (Walking, getting up/down from any surface, in/out of the shower) Our preference is the use of a metal buckled gait belt for ease of adjustment while it's on the individual.

Buckling the Gait Belt

  1. Hold the buckle in one hand with the teeth facing your opposite hand
  2. Feed the loose (non buckle) end of the gait belt up through the buckle toward the teeth
  3. Bring the loose end over the top of the teeth and feed back down through the opposite side of the buckle
  4. To tighten the belt while in place, grab the side of the belt coming up through the buckle next to the teeth pull it to the side, away from the buckle, tightening the belt
  5. Grab the end of the belt and pull the excess through the buckle
