In this video, Cindy demonstrates how to walk with a cane. This applies to Quad canes (four pronged canes) as well.
Instruction on how to walk with a cane
- Cane always goes in the hand opposite the weak/injuried leg.
- If neither leg is specifically affected, the cane can be used in the preferred hand (usually the dominant hand).
- Biggest issue with learning to walk with cane is thinking too hard about how to use it correctly
- Relax and walk as naturally as possible. Due to normal walking pattern, opposite arm/leg move forward at the same time, allowing the cane to fall in walking pattern as it should. Practice walking 2-3 times, if you feel disjointed movement, continue to remind yourself to relax and walk “normally”
- If you have to bear any significant weight on the cane, you are not ready and should be on a walker instead
- If you or your loved one is on a cane and you feel yourself/see them leaning sideways over the cane as they advance their opposite leg, the cane is most likely being used in the wrong hand
- Always defer to more supportive device (walker) if uncertain
- Ask your PCP for a PT consultation as needed for saefty
