BASIC FEATURES: Transport Wheelchair

The content included in the video and comment section is for general information only.  Equipment and individual circumstances will vary.  Always refer to and review an equipment manual for specifics on use and safety of your piece of medical equipment.  Please consult with a local Physical or Occupational Therapist regarding your specific circumstances and use of medical equipment.

In this video the caregiver will learn about the basic features of a transport wheelchair.   This type of wheelchair is a good alternative to a standard wheelchair when taking the client or loved one outside the home.  Note: if the client needs the use of a standard manual wheelchair inside the home for self propulsion, insurance won't typically cover both.  Always check for a local medical equipment lending program near you for low cost/no cost medical equipment.

Basic Features

  • Light in weight
  • 4 small wheels ( unlike two large back wheels on manual wheelchair)
  • Must be pushed by a caregiver
  • Brakes at back wheels or hand breaks, must be applied by caregiver
  • Foot rests, typically swing away
  • Folds up by pulling seat up in middle, bringing sides together
