In this video Cindy will demonstrate how to walk with Axillary or Under Arm Crutches when an individual is Non Weightbearing (NWB) on one leg.

Step To gait (walking) pattern: may start with this pattern initially, until they become more comfortable with the crutches.

  • Hold the injured, NWB leg straight and in front of you or bend the knee holding the foot up behind you.  (if it's the knee that is injuried, the leg will need to be held in front)
  • Place crutches forward a comfortable distance
  • Step To , even with the crutches with the good foot
  • Repeat

Step Through gait (walking) pattern: may begin to use this pattern as you become more comfortable with the crutches.

  • Hold the injured, NWB leg straight and in front of you or bend the knee holding the foot up behind you.  (if it's the knee that is injuried, the leg will need to be held in front)
  • Place crutches forward a comfortable distance
  • Step Through, past the crutches with the good foot
  • Repeat
