TRANSFER: Up & Down from Chair

In this video the caregiver with learn how to instruct an individual to safely stand up from or sit down onto a sitting surface. This would apply to a chair, bed, toilet, car seat, etc.  Depending on the sitting surface, the hand placement for push off will of course change.  Clients should always push off of the surface they are coming from. We do not want clients trying to pull up on the walker, if they are strong enough to push up, if not they will need additional caregiver help for safety.  Always be sure to instruct on the use of appropriate/safe hand placement/push off surfaces.  If there are no safe/appropriate hand placements/push offs, you may need to provide additional assistance. Apply a gait belt for safety.

Verbal cue for standing up from a chair (sitting surface)

  1. Place your hands on the armrests (appropriate hand placements for push off)
  2. Scoot your bottom forward in the chair
  3. Lean forward, bringing your head / "nose out over your toes"
  4. Push up with your hands as you begin to stand 
  5. Bring one hand up to the walker at a time as you come up to standing

Verbal cues for sitting down on a chair (sitting surface)

  1. Back up to the chair (sitting surface) until you feel it at the back of your legs
  2. Reach back with one hand, finding the surface you are sitting down on
  3. As you begin to sit, reach back with the other hand, sitting down onto the chair
