TOILET: Installing Compact Safety Rails

In this video the caregiver will learn how to install and instruct an individual on how to use the compact safety rails. If the current toilet height is appropriate, but there is not appropriate/safe areas for hand placement when getting on/off the toilet this may be a good option for additional assistance and safety.

Some individuals may need demonstration or tactile cues along with verbal cues.

Verbal Cues Sitting Down

  1. Back up until you feel the toilet at the back of your legs
  2. Reach back one hand at a time (assist with hand placement as needed)
  3. Bend your knees, stick your bottom out, lower yourself down to the toilet

Verbal Cues Standing Up

  1. Put your hands on the safety rail (assist with hand placement as needed)
  2. Scoot your bottom forward
  3. Lean forward, bringing your head/ "nose out over your toes"
  4. Push up with both hands evenly as you stand
  5. Bring one hand up to the walker at a time
