In this video caregivers will learn how to assist individuals when getting in/out of bed. You might hear this called a Sit to Supine or Supine to Sit Transfer. Supine=lying on the back, face up. The goal is to keep the individual safe, but allow them to do as much as possible, giving verbal cues and assistance as needed.
Verbal Cues for Lying Down
- Firm your stomach as you lie down to protect your back
- Lie down onto your side, coming down onto your elbow as you bring you feet up onto the bed
- Keeping your knees bent, roll onto your back (Have them log roll, not twist at the waist)
Verbal Cues for Scooting Side to Side in Bed
- Bend your knees up putting your feet on the bed
- Push down on your feet and hands, lift your bottom and move it over (in the direction they need to move)
- Move your head and shoulders over (same direction) Repeat until they are positioned(at side of the bed when preparing to get up, leaving enough room to roll onto side)
Verbal Cues for Sitting Up
- Bend your knees up, putting your feet on the bed
- Firm your stomach, reach with your top hand toward the side of the bed and log roll onto your side, placing your top hand on the bed
- Push up with your elbow that is against the bed and down on the bed with the top hand as you bring your legs off of the bed, coming up into sitting
Increased Assistance (min to mod) Getting in/out of the Bed
***Make sure to give verbal cues to let the client know what to expect***
Laying an Individual Down onto the Bed
- Have the individual place their hands in their lap
- Caregiver, get as close to the individual as possible, standing in stride
- Bend your knees
- Place one hand around the top of their shoulders (not around the back of the neck)
- Bring the other hand under their legs at the back of the knees
- Caregivers, bend your knees, keep your head and shoulders up and stay as close to the client as possible
- Lift their legs up onto the bed as you lay the individuals upper body down onto the bed
Sitting an Individual up onto the Side of the Bed
- From a position of the individual lying on their back, assist them in bending their knees up and putting their feet on the bed
- Place one hand on their far shoulder and one hand on their knees
- Roll them onto their side facing you
- Caregiver, bend your knees, keep your head and shoulders up, stay as close to the client as possible
- Place one hand under their shoulders (not under their neck), the other hand behind the knees from the top side
- Pull their legs forward off of the bed while lifting their upper body into sitting
