BED In & Out 2

In this video caregivers will learn how to assist individuals when getting in/out of bed. You might hear this called a Sit to Supine or Supine to Sit Transfer.  Supine=lying on the back, face up. The goal is to keep the individual safe, but allow them to do as much as possible, giving verbal cues and assistance as needed.

Verbal Cues for Lying Down

  1. Firm your stomach as you lie down to protect your back
  2. Lie down onto your side, coming down onto your elbow as you bring you feet up onto the bed
  3. Keeping your knees bent, roll onto your back (Have them log roll, not twist at the waist)

Verbal Cues for Scooting Side to Side in Bed

  1. Bend your knees up putting your feet on the bed
  2. Push down on your feet and hands, lift your bottom and move it over (in the direction they need to move)
  3. Move your head and shoulders over (same direction) Repeat until they are positioned(at side of the bed when preparing to get up, leaving enough room to roll onto side)

Verbal Cues for Sitting Up

  1. Bend your knees up, putting your feet on the bed
  2. Firm your stomach, reach with your top hand toward the side of the bed and log roll onto your side, placing your top hand on the bed
  3. Push up with your elbow that is against the bed and down on the bed with the top hand as you  bring your legs off of the bed, coming up into sitting
