TIP: Home Alone Tips - Knee

Cindy is discussing Tips for Returning Home Alone after a Total Knee Replacement.  We, of course, always recommend that you have assistance at least for a few days after your surgery for safety on your return home.

Tip #1  Mail Delivery

Make arrangements with mail carrier to place mail somewhere easily accessible, good height for you to reach safely, not having to bend over

Tip #2   Meals

Prepare and freeze meals ahead of surgery or arrange for meal delivery

Tip #3   Bathroom Items

Stock up on extra toiletries prior to surgery

Tip #4   Appropriate Place to Sit on Your Return Home After Surgery

Sitting Surface

  • good height, hips should not be below knees
  • should be able to get up using arms and good leg only
  • preferably has armrests
  • may need to look into furniture/platform risers for your couch, recliner or chair

Tip #5  Caring for Pets

Reminder, there is a good chance you will not be able to bend over safely for awhile after surgery.  If you are unable to arrange for someone else to temporarily care for your pets, you will need to prepare ahead of surgery on:

1. How to let you pets outside -  long tie out for dogs, chair by door in order to sit down to attach lead to collar without bending over

2.  How to fill food and water bowls

         Do IT Yourself Option

  •  extended PVC chute with funnel
  •  3' long 2" diameter PVC pipe
  •  small funnel
  •  duct tape
