BED: In & Out 1 with Bed Transfer Aids

In this video caregivers will learn how to assist individuals when getting in/out of bed using a bedrail and a step stool for assistance. The goal is to keep the individual safe, but allow them to do as much as possible, giving verbal cues and assistance as needed.

Bedrail in Place/Foot Stool in Place as Needed

   Verbal Cues for Getting Into Bed

  1. Back up to the step stool
  2. Step up with the strong leg first, then the weaker leg
  3. Take a hold of the bedrail, placing the opposite hand on the bed
  4. Sit down on the bed
  5. Firm your stomach as you lay down to protect 
  6. your back
  7. Lay down onto your side, coming down onto your elbow as you bring you feet up onto the bed (assist with legs as needed)
  8. Caregiver use caution with step stool, placing a foot on the stool if stable and as needed to get closer to the client, in order to protect your back
  9. Keeping your knees bent, roll onto your back (Having them log roll, not twisting at the waist)

   Verbal Cues for Getting Out of the Bed

  1. Bend your knees up, putting your feet on the  bed 
  2. Firm your stomach, reach with your top hand over and grab the bedrail
  3. Log roll onto your side, placing your top hand on the bed
  4. Push up with your elbow that is against the  bed and down on the bedrail with the top hand as you  bring your legs off of the bed, coming up into sitting (assist with legs as needed)
  5.  Caregiver use caution with step stool, placing a foot on the stool if stable and as needed to get closer to the client, in order to protect your back
  6. When coming down off the step stool, come down with the weaker leg first.
