Cindy is discussing several adaptive equipment options for use in the bedroom in order to improve safety getting your client or loved one in/out of the bed. Please take note of the height of the bed. This can often be an area of concern if the individual is not able to touch the floor while sitting safely on the edge of the bed. Having to slide off the edge of the bed before one foot touches the floor poses a fall risk. When getting into the bed, if the individual's arms are not strong enough to assist in scooting their buttock safely back onto the bed before laying down can increase fall risk as well. Often times, individuals may have difficulty sitting up or laying down from the side of the bed, needing an additional hand hold to assist. If an individual needs assistance with their legs in/out of the bed, they may be able to be instructed to assist themself with a piece of adaptive equipment. Equipment options to improve safety and function being reviewed include: step stool and bed rail and leg lifter. See video in this series: Assisting with a Bed Transfer with Bed Transfer Aids for demonstration of the step stool and bed rail.
