TIP: Apply & Use Toileting Sling with Mechanical Lift

In this video the caregiver will learn how to apply a Toileting Sling and what client positioning in the sling will look like once lifted with a mechanical lift.  This Toileting Sling can be applied on a client in the bed or in a seated position.  It can be used for transfers to a bedside commode (or commode if space and safety permits) and improves access to clothing adjustment prior to and after toileting. Use of a mechanical lift should be considered to transfer individuals who are unable to bear weight through their legs and/or are unable to assist with the transfer.  Be sure to assess the client’s needs for the appropriate type of sling to be used when using the mechanical lift.  The client should have good head, neck and trunk control when using a Toileting Sling.  Be sure to assess the client or loved one's ability to cooperate/follow instruction during the transfer for safety.

Things to consider:

  1.  Make sure the clearance and space beneath the bed is adequate in order to properly position/use the lift.
  2.  The base of the lift must be in its widest position before lifting your client or loved one
  3.   Always know the weight limit of the lift and the sling being used
  4.   Never exceed the lowest weight limit of the two (sling and lift) Example: If you have a sling with a weight limit of     450lbs and a lift with a weight limit of 500lbs the individual being transferred cannot weigh any more than 450 lbs.
  5.   Always make sure that both the lift and the sling are in good working condition before use
  6.   Do not use a sling that is torn or fraying

Take Care 2 Care

  • Allow the loved one to do as much as possible
  • Assist them into sitting at the side of the bed
  • Raise the bed as needed to improve body mechanics when assisting the loved one to the side of the bed

Sling placement

  1. Place the sling around the back of the client
  2. Tags of the sling should be facing away from the client
  3. The bottom edge of the sling is positioned in the area of the client’s tailbone with the upper edge/belt around waist level.
  4. Fasten the inner belt to a snug fit (make sure there are no issues in the stomach area that would prevent the use of the belt)
  5. Bring each side of the sling around to the front of the client's body, making sure the client's arms are on the outside of the sling.
  6. Bring each leg strap beneath each thigh approximately 3-4” above the back of the knees.

Preparing for the Lift

  1.          Position the mechanical lift, making sure to widen the base
  2.          Make sure the swivel bar does not come into contact with your client or loved one
  3.          Use the color-coded loops, or mark with identifying tape/ribbon, to make sure you attach both upper straps at the same length and both lower straps at the same length
  4.          Criss cross the leg straps looping one through the other before attaching at the correct color-coded loops on the swivel bar.

Performing the Lift

  1.           Always inform the individual of what to expect/what you are doing
  2.           Do not apply the mechanical lift brakes during the lift (lift needs to be allowed to move in order to position itself beneath the individual's center of gravity as they are lifted)
  3.           Base of lift should be in its widest position
  4.           The client’s hands/arms should be outside the sling
  5.           Make sure the pump valve is closed by turning clockwise
  6.           Use pump handle to begin lifting client off of the bed
  7.           Continue to monitor the sling attachments as you begin to lift
  8.           Raise just until the individual's bottom has cleared the bed
  9.           Lower the bed to prevent having to lift them any higher than necessary
  10.      Once lifted, the Toileting Sling allows access to the client’s clothing for removal down to the back of the thighs.
  11.       Once the client is positioned on the bedside commode, there is the option of removing the sling for further clothing   adjustment/comfort as needed.
  12.       When reapplying the sling for transfer off of the bedside commode, make sure to pull the client’s pants up on the   back of the thighs as far as possible, applying the leg straps of the sling below the area of the gathered clothing.

Always be sure to consult with a local Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist and your Medical Equipment dealer for questions about your specific situation and equipment.
