In this video Alex demonstrates a Heel Slide using the Vive PROFlex Strap.  This is 2-in-1 leg lifter and exercise strap is helpful in getting your leg on/off the bed, as well as assisting with exercises after surgery.  The heel slide exercise is helpful with knee and hip range of motion.(Disclosure -- Vive PROFlex Strap was designed by Cindy, PT with Adaptive Equipment Corner for her knee and hip clients:)

  • With the PROFlex Strap in the open "U" shaped position, place the foot loop around your foot
  • Lie back, holding to the handles or loops of the strap
  • Use your hands to assist your leg as you bend your knee, sliding your heel toward your buttocks
  • Pull through your full range of motion until you feel a mild stretch
  • Slide your heel back out until your leg is fully straight
  • Perform 5-10 repetitions, 1-2x per day

This exercise can be performed with a sheet or long belt as well.

If one of your precautions is "No bending greater than 90 degrees at the hips", use caution not to break this by leaning too far forward in placing the strap around your foot. Additionally, keep your heel on the surface that you are lying on as your perform the heel slide in order to prevent breaking the above precaution as well.  Check with your surgeon and/or physical therapist on the appropriateness of this exercise after surgery.  Depending on your surgery, some surgeons may initially hold this exercise after surgery.
