An Introduction to Bed/Supine Exercises

Below we have included general leg strengthening bed/supine(lying down) exercises, demonstrated by Dr Alex Lockridge, PT with Adaptive Equipment corner.

These exercises can be performed on the bed (recliner if necessary) or if you are safe and able, can be performed on the floor.

You may hear a reference in these videos to Total Hip or Knee Replacement surgeries.  If you have had a Total Hip or Knee joint replacement in the last 6 months, you will know which exercises are appropriate for you. Otherwise, these are good general leg strengthening exercises as well.  These exercises are available in a printable PDF on the Dashboard under the Resource tab.

As with any exercise program, you need to consult with your doctor prior to starting.  If during exercise you have the onset of pain or an increase in pain, stop immediately and consult with your doctor.

The number of exercise repetitions and sets per day are just a suggestion and should be adjusted, as needed, to fit your fitness level and tolerance.

If you feel you need further and/or individual instruction on an exercise program, please consult with a local physical therapist.
